Types of EV Chargers
The UK is shifting gears into an electric future, and electric vehicles are at the heart of this revolution. With the government aiming to ban new petrol and diesel car sales by 2035, the demand for EV infrastructure, especially chargers, is on the up.
What does that mean for drivers today? Let’s break down everything you need to know about EV chargers in the UK.

What Types of EV Chargers Are There?
There are three main types of EV chargers based on speed and power output.
1. Slow Chargers
- Best for overnight charging or a trickle charge, unfortunately the charge time is very slow.
- Long charge times.
- Often just a standard 3-pin plug with a special lead called a mode Two charger.
2. Fast Chargers
- Best for home or workplace charging.
- A dedicated supply from the mains or fuse board in the property, allowing charging up to 7Kw for single phase or 22Kw for three phases.
- Faster charge times depending on battery size.
- Most commonly found at a domestic property.
3. Rapid & Ultra-Rapid Chargers
- Found at service stations and along motorways.
- Charge time: 20–60 minutes.
- Use CCS or CHAdeMO connectors for compatibility with most modern EVs.
How Much Does EV Charging Cost?
EV charging costs vary based on speed and provider:
- Home Charging: Depending on your tariff, you could get prices as low as 7p per Kw. If your car has a 70Kw battery, then a full charge at these prices would cost you just £10
- Public Chargers:
- Fast chargers: ~30–40p per kWh
- Rapid chargers: ~50–70p per kWh
- Some places still offer free charging, especially supermarkets or hotels.
Using a home charger overnight on a cheap tariff is by far the most cost-effective option for most drivers.
